    Once you have tightened down the bowl, trim the shims. Use a white or coloured (not clear) caulk to conceal trimmed shims and finish the job nicely. Don’t caulk all the way around. Leave a gap in the back of the toilet (where you can’t reach anyways) so that if ever the toilet leaks, the water won’t be trapped and you’ll be able to see it.

    I’m confused, what happened to the shims? Were they cut under the bowl and left to remain and be covered with caulk or did they get removed after the leveling and clamp down?
