While i agree that positive reinforcement is a large part of toilet training, I also think that modeling is extremely important for success. For instance if your toilet training a boy you would want to have men in the child’s life model using the toilet. I think this gives the child a better understanding of what is being asked of him and shows the normality of using a toilet.

unless the child is not developmentally ready to be potty trined no matter what the reinforcer is he doesnt mind being wet or siled in his pants ..i caught him splashing around in his own urine unphased..

use a the most valuable Reinforcer and keep it in the toilet every time the child goes give him lots of praise and that reinforcer ( video tv- tape) which stays in the toilet, control the reinforcer and you can control the behaviour.

In the case of my older son (w/DS), frequent trips were met with distinct non-compliance. What worked best, and I suspect will for my Autistic boy, is for potty times to be connected to daily events. IE first thing in the morning, last thing at night, before you go out. Regulation can work in the absence of the readiness skills described in this vid.

Some of his NT peers aren’t toilet trained in his 3+ preschool. I agree with positive reinforcement, however, throw out the data collection. Mr. Cicero is plainly wrong in some of his advice.

Doc, while I understand the need for a video like this, let me tell you this. Data Collection is ridiculous for toilet training. My autistic disorder (not AS) child was toilet trained at 3. No data collection, all positive reinforcement. Trials and data is a lot of garbage. If someone knows how to connect with an autistic person and can motivate them to their individual style, it is quite easy to toilet train. It took 1 week for Junior to be toilet trained.
