    the putty is actually to create friction between the toilet and porcelain floor .. not really to seal.. and you should use silicone to seal the bottom except the backside of the toilet so u know if there is a leak..

    Just a quick question! I live in the UK where toilets are different! The drains tend to go through the walls rather then the floor. Would you be able to tell me how to install a British toilet?

    thats a good question. I do use silicone, but only after the toilet is installed. its a fail-safe.

    I’ve always placed the wax ring on the closet flange first and lined the toilet up with the mounting holes. Also, why do you use plumbers putty instead of silicone caulk?
